Coming from a massage therapist background, my goal is to help you balance your body with exercises and movements that address your unique posture and daily habits. A balanced body has optimal space for baby to move and get into the best position for labor - and that makes all the difference in delivery! By addressing postural nuances in pregnancy you can have an easier labor/delivery and recovery, which frees you up to bond with your baby in that post birth glow!

Care philosophy

I believe that birth is a moment for you to have agency over your body and to sink into your inner knowing. I believe that birth can be an incredibly empowering moment for you and the family you are expanding. That is the core of my philosophy on birth. It’s about the journey to get to meet your baby, and I want to help you have the best journey possible!

I grew up in Austin, TX in a sweet old neighborhood bursting with young families. I was raised to be a very open minded, generous, and compassionate individual. I was also very curious and fascinated by pregnancy and birth from a very young age. I quickly became a favored child caregiver because of my strong work ethic and calm, nurturing spirit. As I continued child care through and after college, these varied and rich experiences with parents and children naturally led me to my interest in becoming a birth, postpartum and sibling doula. I have trained with both Doula Trainings International (DTI) and Doulas of North America (DONA). Training with two different organizations has given me a diversity of lenses when it comes awareness and education on how to best support the families I work with. I have also opened my scope and skills additionally, by becoming a reiki practitioner. Giving emotional and physical support to birthing people before, during, and after the life-changing experience of childbirth has become my passion. Through education about good prenatal health, labor, lactation, delivery and postpartum care, I hope to help birthing people feel confident and empowered. Apart from my doula work, I love cooking and eating delicious food and dancing! I absolutely love being in nature, and enjoy taking off on adventures whenever I have the opportunity.

Care philosophy

My philosophy of care as a doula is that the parent comes before the baby. I believe that if parents are being taken care of, then they will be better parents. Of course babies should be loved and nurtured and have all of their needs met, but the parents need these things as well. In a society so far removed from the village culture, I try to bring that back, through guidance and support.

Stephanie was very supportive throughout my experience with her- from prenatal to labor to birth and postpartum. She was quick to communicate via text, email or phone and was on call from the weeks leading up to my due date until I went into labor (post dates). At our request, she made a special clause to our contract in case we were allowed only video call support during COVID. Fortunately we did not need it! Stephanie was supportive of my desire to have an unmedicated birth- met me to assist with labor before heading to hospital. She was a great advocate throughout labor and supported me with a postpartum visit and many follow up texts. She still checked in with me a couple months postpartum. Stephanie goes above and beyond and truly cares about her clients.

My path to becoming a doula began in 2014 with the birth of my first child. It was then that I learned the value of a positive birth experience. My next two children taught me how unique each birth could be. In early 2019, I served in the role of doula to another birthing person for the first time. That experience showed me how important a caring, sensitive, and knowledgeable support system is during childbirth. I knew I had found a calling and I discovered DONA International. I trained with DONA International in September of 2019, have completed my certification, and have been continuously supporting families in the Austin area since.

Care philosophy

I recognize birth as a key life experience that you will remember for the rest of your life and I vow to protect your memory of this powerful event. I have no personal agenda and I aim to be as inclusive as possible in my practice. This means that I am dedicated to supporting you regardless of your birthing location, use of pain medications, personal beliefs, or how you define yourself or family.

“Alicia is an incredible doula and we are so grateful she was part of the birth of our second child. We had a lot of trauma and anxiety after a difficult birth experience with our first child, so we wanted to do everything possible to make our second birth a more positive and empowering experience. It was clear from our first meeting with Alicia that she was a perfect fit for our vision for this birth. She provides the perfect blend of sensitive and compassionate emotional support and practical, evidence-based advice. I especially appreciated that Alicia has an extensive background in science and uses it to inform her practice. During my pregnancy, she provided thoughtful and practical guidance for preparing physically and emotionally for the birth. Her support helped me feel confident and ready.

During labor and delivery, Alicia provided calming, intuitive support that helped me manage my pain and kept me from becoming overwhelmed or discouraged. She anticipated my needs by providing practical advice, soothing touch and massage, and encouragement during rough moments. She also helped support my husband so that he could be responsive to my needs.

Overall, my son’s birth was as close to my vision of a perfect birth as I could have possibly hoped for. It was an empowering and healing experience, and having Alicia as our doula played a huge role in making it so positive and joyous. I would strongly and enthusiastically recommend Alicia to anyone looking for a doula.”

The first time I witnessed the miracle of birth I was fourteen and supporting my sister through her first pregnancy and birth journey. I was so drawn into the moment, amazed at the process of birth and the vulnerability of it all. Fast forward several years and I was able to be a support person for her during her three other birth experiences. Each one so different but every time so incredible. I have been called to birth work for a few years and now is the beginning of my official start to the work. I hope to provide a grounding presence, an open-mind, a reassuring support when you need it, and a calming energy. I recognize how important this moment is for an individual and their family. For that reason, I am passionate about it becoming an empowering moment full of support and validation.

Care philosophy

My values as a doula include compassionate care, open-mindedness, inclusivity, presence and adaptability. I truly believe that you know what is best for yourself and I want to foster and support that unfolding. I first became interested in doula work during the pregnancy and birth of my daughter in 2016. At the time, I quickly realized that I knew close to nothing about childbirth, and felt overwhelmed trying to navigate the planning and decision making process. My research mind kicked in and I delved deep into the birth world, learning everything I could. This led me to investigate not only birth, breastfeeding and newborn care, but also nutrition, mindfulness, and holistic lifestyle. In January 2020 I was lucky to attend an amazing full spectrum doula training, preparing me to support families in birth and postpartum, with additional training in reproductive health. My passion is combining the scientific and researched information necessary to make the best choices for your birth, along with my holistic knowledge and spiritual perspective in my doula work. I genuinely love to meet expecting parents and share my knowledge, support, and passion for birth and babies!

Care philosophy

My goal is to provide parents with the knowledge and support needed to confidently step into your new role as mother or parent. I use holistic and traditional practices to support healing from birth, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. I also offer practical advice on taking care of your new baby while also caring for yourself during the exciting, sensitive, and challenging postpartum time.

Over the years, I’ve worked in maternity in just about every capacity. I eventually came to realize from working so intimately with new families, that there was an enormous need for better preparation for birth and early parenting. Starting Doulas of Austin has allowed me and my team to focus on the emotional and psychological components of birth and postpartum in hopes of achieving better outcomes for expectant and growing families. With a respect of science and medicine coupled with the softer side of compassionate doula care, I'm confident that we’re elevating the standard of doula care in Austin.

Care philosophy

When my sister had her first baby, I quickly discovered firsthand just how hard it can be to navigate these variations of normal within the mysterious world of pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. There is so much conflicting information, it’s HARD to shift through everything to find the options that make the most sense for you and your family. In pursuit of becoming a doula, I decided to ditch the Google and combat fear with facts. I went back to school for Maternal and Child Health at the University of Texas Health Science Center and became certified with DONA International as a labor doula. I love providing evidence-based, full-spectrum care for people who are expecting— whether that’s prenatal support appointments, hip squeezes, or that desperately needed postpartum hug. When you select me as your doula, I am your whole-hearted cheerleader every step of the way. If you are currently expecting and are looking for a doula in the Central Texas area, I would love to speak with you about how I can best support you through your pregnancy!

Doula Services: FAQs

A doula is a professional that provides emotional, physical and educational support to new parents before, during, and after childbirth and into the early postpartum period. Doulas are companions who strive to give families a safe, positive, and healthy labor experience. They provide parents with evidence-based information and education on childbirth and are someone who the parent can turn to with questions and concerns about having a baby. Doulas also take an active role in collaborating with the parent to create a birth plan.

A certified birth doula offers advice and techniques to help reduce the stress that the parent often experiences during childbirth and provides you with education about different aspects of delivery and labor and what comes after.

You can hire two types of doulas in Austin, TX: a birth doula and a postpartum doula. The birth doula is during your pregnancy and through the birth of your child. They provide you with emotional, physical and educational support during your pregnancy, your labor and delivery and for the first few hours after your child is born.

A postpartum doula will support you for the first few weeks after the baby is born. They provide in-home assistance, including teaching you how to take care of your newborn, acting as lactation consultant, and can provide some night nanny services.

Yes, a birth doula can provide support during a Cesarean birth and delivery. Doulas are non-medical professionals and do not replace obstetricians, physicians, midwives or nurses. They are an additive member to the team and provide emotional, physical and informational support to the birthing parent, partner and family. It is up to you whether the certified doula can remain in the operating room during the procedure.

When you hire a doula in Austin, TX, your services typically include several in-person prenatal sessions, 24/7 phone and text support, full attendance throughout your labor, and several hours of support immediately following your birth.

A doula in Austin, TX can help you in any kind of birth. Certified doulas are able to assist parents in creating the ideal “birth environment” and help parents deliver their baby safely. A doula can provide support during the birth whether it occurs in a hospital, a home, or another birth center of some kind. Doulas are there to support you in your desired birth preferences, whether that is a preference for natural, non-medicated, assisted, C-section or anything else.

Certified doulas can also act as a liaison between you and hospital staff regarding your childbirth expectations and preferences. For example, if your preference is to have a non-medicated birth, a doula can help guide you through that process and create a personalized birth plan. A certified doula in Austin, TX does not replace medical staff (such as your obstetrician and nurses).

When a surgical procedure is required, there are some situations in which a birth doula can also remain in the operating room, although this is not an expected obligation. A certified birth doula can also assist hospital staff to improve the overall birthing experience. A doula in Austin, TX will typically stay with the parents for several hours after birth to help them with birth recovery.

Recent studies show that parents who have a support person like a doula by their side throughout labor and childbirth are more likely to:

  1. Give birth without the need for pain medicine
  2. Describe their birth experience in a positive way
  3. Give birth without the need for medical intervention, such as C-sections or vacuum delivery
  4. Experience a shorter labor

You can hire a doula early in your pregnancy to allow you time to get to know each other and to begin planning for your later trimesters, labor, birth, and aftercare. It is ideal to hire a doula when you are around 20 weeks along, but you can start looking for one before that.

It is never too late to hire a doula in Austin, TX; you have right up to your due date to find a doula near you and receive all the benefits of doula support.

While many people think that a doula and a midwife are the same thing, their educational background and job duties are different. Doulas are non-medical professionals who provide emotional, physical and educational support, while also offering actionable advice and guidance to new parents about how to nurture their baby.

A midwife is a certified nurse-midwife (CNM) or a certified midwife (CM). CNMs are medical professionals that are certified and licensed by the American College of Nurse-Midwives. CMs are also certified, but they do not have nursing backgrounds.

Doulas are not medical professionals; they focus on the emotional support for the parents and the family before, during, and after the birth of the baby. Their job is to provide information, advice, and support to the family not diagnose any medical conditions or provide medical advice.
