My name is Nitra and I am a birth / postpartum doula moving as a vessel for love and compassion for those that I serve here in Atlanta, GA. Born in Washington state, I started my training in Seattle. As a natural emotional laborer, I stumbled on the idea of birth work through fortune and was immediately enticed by an undeniable responsibility bigger than myself. I reflected on my own birthing and pregnancy experience during training and discovered my heart pulling passion to protect underrepresented communities. As a shield of protection, I especially like to focus my work on the wellbeing of birthing folks who experience, post traumatic stress, triggers, obstetric violence, systematic racism, microaggressions, misgendering, and any other uncomfortable truths that show up in a birthing environment. I feel it’s especially important to encourage parents to access information and advocate for themselves when they feel the decision making process is out of their hands.

Care philosophy

Personally my belief is that humans are capable of moving with their intuition, which can guide them to form their own ideas for their body and or birth. I am only someone in support of those ideas/ needs, holding space for them, and will advocate/ educate when asked to do so. My care is rooted in protection and nurture.. I move as

As a holistic nutritionist and birth doula, I help women gain clarity and shed overwhelm through pre-conception, pregnancy, and childbirth. I am based in Athens, GA, where I provide in-person doula and nutrition support. I also accept virtual clients for nutrition support, whether in the pre-conception, pregnancy or postpartum phase. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with women as they prepare for a healthy pregnancy and childbirth. I believe food is what connects us all and is at the root of all necessary healing - whether your goal is to sleep more, improve digestion, or promote fertility. When I'm not working with clients, you can find me on a stroll in my neighborhood, perusing vintage shops, or putting a slab of butter on whatever piece of food I have in my hand.

Care philosophy

My service as a birth doula includes ongoing availability via text, phone, and email as well as 2+ prenatal visits, continuous labor support, 1-2 hours of immediate postpartum support, and 1 postpartum visit. Throughout our time working together, I offer emotional, physical, informational, and advocacy support for both the birthing person and partner during this life-changing transition.

Hi, my name is Stephanie and I am a DONA certified Birth Doula, Postpartum Doula, certified Lactation Educator Counselor, certified CPR Instructor, certified Child Passenger Safety Technician, and certified Happiest Baby Educator. My husband Jeff and I have been married for 23 years and we live north of Atlanta with our son Hunter. When I am not with clients, I enjoy hiking, sewing, going to the gym, and spending time with my family Before becoming a stay-at-home mom, I spent the previous 20 years of my life working in the medical-office field, beginning as a filing clerk and working my way up to billing manager and eventually office manager, which included the management of an OB/GYN practice in the Northside Hospital area. When my husband and I decided to become parents ourselves, we struggled with infertility issues, which resulted in us consulting a reproductive specialist. After weighing all the options, we decided to try In-Vitro Fertilization in order to conceive our son. It was a long and difficult process, but we are forever grateful to the physician and his practice along with the never ending support we received from our family, friends, and coworkers. When a longtime childhood friend asked me to support her during the home birth of her second child as well as photograph the experience, I gladly accepted. A few years later, she asked me to be there again for the birth of her third child. A year later I was asked by another childhood friend, if I would participate in the hospital birth of her daughter and be her doula. All three of these experiences had a profound effect on me. These experiences, in addition to becoming a mother myself, allowed me to discover the passion I would have for becoming a doula. As a doula, I am dedicated to educating, supporting, and assisting families so that they have the best possible experience bringing their little ones into the world. No matter whether this is your first child or your sixth child, I am here to help make this a special time.

Care philosophy

I am dedicated to educating, supporting, and assisting families so that they have the best possible experience bringing their little ones into the world, no matter if they are becoming a parent for the first time or the fifth. Knowing that every couple’s needs are different, I tailor the support that I provide to each client’s individual needs and desires.

We hired Stephanie originally as our birth doula, but then hired her for CPR training and certification as well as a postpartum doula. She was a fabulous help in all areas from preparing us for labor, coaching me during labor, helping with breastfeeding questions, helping with the twins for several months after the birth. She is the epitome of professional, incredibly disciplined, and an expert in her field. She is also very comfortable to be around, which is so very needed during labor and postpartum when one is so vulnerable both physically and emotionally. I felt so supported by her and would hire her again in a heartbeat.

She is simply amazing. With Rachel’s phenomenal support I was able to achieve my goal of a natural labor at the hospital. She preformed many different techniques to help me be as comfortable as I could be going through the contractions. Rachel gave me the encouragement I needed and wasn’t afraid to speak up to hospital staff to make sure my birth plan could go accordingly as possible. Not only is she an amazing support for birth but she truly saved my breastfeeding journey. She was very attentive night and day in helping me with any questions or concerns and would even check on us herself which was so nice. Rachel is very passionate and knowledgeable about her work as a doula. I highly recommend her and will most definitely have her be my doula again if I were to have another baby.

I am passionate that marginalized people have just as much education and access to dignified care. I continually train in medical advocacy, consent, trauma informed care, childbirth education, movement based pregnancy and labor. I have taken my 20+ years as a dance teacher, medical advocate, ceremonial space creator, massage therapist, mother, and informal birth support to inform my education as a Birth Doula and Childbirth Educator. I have been through two Doula trainings before I found the right fit for me with Birthing Advocacy Doula Training/BADT, their classes are "socially conscious, culturally appropriate, diverse, and action-oriented. We not only train our students to serve their clients using the best practices available, we also provide them with a wide perspective of disparities, inequalities, policies and rights, and prepare them to be active partners in the movement to change birth and reproductive health culture locally, nationally and globally." I have taken Birth and Disability, Childbirth Education thru them as well. I also take monthly Ehlers Danlos Syndrome/EDS medical advocacy and clinicians training through the Ehlers Danlos Society in order to serve my EDS clients as well as the general EDS population.

Care philosophy

I share resources and education so that they can make evidence and consent based choices for their birth. I believe birth should be allowed to unfold as uninterrupted as possible and I will hold that space for you in what ever way you have chosen.

Kathryn Courtoy

Atlanta, GA

9 reviews • 10 families supported • 3 years experience

Hi and welcome! My name is Kathryn and I am a certified labor doula, supporting families in Marietta and the Atlanta area. I have a B.S in community health and human services. I received my Certified Labor Doula certification from CAPPA in December 2017. I recently completed my recertification in December of 2020. My personal pregnancy journeys has been the catalyst for this business. I have 3 children, one boy and a girl, and an angel daughter above. When I began exploring the moments in my life that were an exclamation mark, the moments that literally almost took my breath away to the moments that made me drop in pain, they all centered around the journey to build my family. It wasn’t until my early 30s, when my husband and I were beginning our family building journey, that I realized what a delicate, amazing experience it is, just to be pregnant, to carry life, and to give birth. After suffering for 5 years with infertility, I became pregnant with my son via IVF. He was born via cesarean and I am convinced that is the way he was meant to be born. With that birth, I have a permanent scar that I look at daily with gratitude. It reminds me of the perseverance, strength and patience it took for him to arrive. But, with that same strength and determination I received from that experience, I was led to feel that spark to try for a VBAC when I shockingly became pregnant two years later. Gasp. The conception of my daughter was a wonderful gift and the way she came into the world was basically just that. Her birth was a fierce, fast, and empowering experience, mirroring her personality. My unmedicated VBAC has stuck in my mind as one of the greatest experiences of my life and initially lit my determination to become a birth worker. Her birth made me realize a new found love I had for my body, for growing her, and birthing her. I became pregnant again in 2016, with my daughter Charlotte. Sadly, I suffered a 16 week loss when she passed away. As with anyone who has suffered pregnancy and infant loss, you know that special kind of pain. It is without a doubt the darkest experience I have had in my life. With this loss, I gained an inner strength and renewed spirituality. She is a part of my spirit and my story. There is not a single day that goes by that I don’t think of her. I look at each of these so very different experiences , these 3 hearts, with such awe. Undoubtedly, they have left a profound mark on my heart and have taught me my biggest life lessons. They are extensions of my soul that I carry daily with me. I share these experiences because they are me, they are my inspiration for this business, and my daily reminder of the inner strength women possess. Pregnancy and birth is an experience like no other. Make sure you have the support you need to make this experience positive and empowering: Empowerment= less trauma.

Care philosophy

The way you birth matters. Why? Because it's a vulnerable experience. My job as a doula is to make sure my clients have tools they need to be involved in the decision making process when it comes to this experience. What does that look like? Pulling the most up to date evidence on inductions, offering different comfort measures, optimal baby positioning, and informed consent.

I’ve worked with Claudia specifically related to pre-natal and hormonal support. I suffer from PCOS, so I reached out to Claudia to learn how I can start to get my hormones to the right levels in order for me to not experience the symptoms that come with PCOS (facial hair growth, weight gain, depression, etc.). With her support and knowledge, I learned more about the condition; she also prepared a tea blend to help me regulate my hormones and prepare for pregnancy. Claudia’s professionalism and dedication is unmatched. She listened to my concerns, provided me with names of reading material and made sure to let me know that if she didn’t have the answer for something, she’ll look for it. Overall, I would recommend Claudia to anyone looking for prenatal, pregnancy and postnatal support.

I am a wife and mother to four beautiful children. For years, birth has been my passion. When I finally attended my first birth as a doula, it was solidified that this is my calling. I saw how important it was for someone, trained in birth, to never leave the birthing person's side. Since attending that birth, I have devoted my career to helping people during this milestone. I focus my attention on educating my clients of their options, how to advocate for themselves, how to ask the correct questions, and how to trust their body during this transformative time. I offer various packages to meet you where you are, so every person can have doula support.

Care philosophy

I believe that education is the key to having a powerful and positive birth experience. No matter what might happen during your pregnancy, labor, and beyond, if you are well educated and supported, then you will feel empowered and in control. Women/ birthing people are so strong and capable, and need to be supported, so they can gracefully embrace their birth no matter what that looks like.

Doula Services: FAQs

A doula is a professional that provides emotional, physical and educational support to new parents before, during, and after childbirth and into the early postpartum period. Doulas are companions who strive to give families a safe, positive, and healthy labor experience. They provide parents with evidence-based information and education on childbirth and are someone who the parent can turn to with questions and concerns about having a baby. Doulas also take an active role in collaborating with the parent to create a birth plan.

A certified birth doula offers advice and techniques to help reduce the stress that the parent often experiences during childbirth and provides you with education about different aspects of delivery and labor and what comes after.

There are two ways you can hire a doula through Meela in Gainesville, GA.

You can browse through the available doulas in Gainesville, GA and send the doulas you are interested in a message, introducing yourself and setting up an interview. We recommend interviewing at least three before hiring your top doula.

You can also hire a doula in Gainesville, GA in three easy steps:

  1. Post a job for free: answer some questions and receive responses from top-rated doulas in Gainesville, GA. It takes less than 30 seconds to post your job.
  1. Get your list of Gainesville, GA doulas: in a few hours, you will have a collection of doulas near you who are qualified to meet your needs. You can compare pricing, experience and read reviews. You can chat with each doula to learn more about them.
  1. Hire a doula with confidence: schedule virtual or in-person interviews with your top doula choices. Hire your top doula and start getting the care you deserve.

While the cost of a doula can vary based on experience and the services offered, you can expect the average cost of a doula in Gainesville, GA to be $896, which is the average cost of a doula in the state of Georgia. The cost of a doula in Gainesville, GA can range from $693 to $1,098. These costs are based on a representative group of 288 doulas surveyed by Meela across the state of Georgia. The average cost of a doula in Georgia is lower than the U.S. national average cost of a doula, which is $971.

When hiring a birth doula in Gainesville, GA, you and your doula will discuss and agree upon a fee structure, and your doula will send you itemized invoices through Meela, which you can pay securely through the app.

Some insurance companies will cover all or part of the cost of hiring a doula. Contact your insurance company to find out if they offer any coverage for hiring a doula; not all insurance companies do.

You can hire two types of doulas in Gainesville, GA: a birth doula and a postpartum doula. The birth doula is during your pregnancy and through the birth of your child. They provide you with emotional, physical and educational support during your pregnancy, your labor and delivery and for the first few hours after your child is born.

A postpartum doula will support you for the first few weeks after the baby is born. They provide in-home assistance, including teaching you how to take care of your newborn, acting as lactation consultant, and can provide some night nanny services.

Yes, a birth doula can provide support during a Cesarean birth and delivery. Doulas are non-medical professionals and do not replace obstetricians, physicians, midwives or nurses. They are an additive member to the team and provide emotional, physical and informational support to the birthing parent, partner and family. It is up to you whether the certified doula can remain in the operating room during the procedure.

When you hire a doula in Gainesville, GA, your services typically include several in-person prenatal sessions, 24/7 phone and text support, full attendance throughout your labor, and several hours of support immediately following your birth.

A doula in Gainesville, GA can help you in any kind of birth. Certified doulas are able to assist parents in creating the ideal “birth environment” and help parents deliver their baby safely. A doula can provide support during the birth whether it occurs in a hospital, a home, or another birth center of some kind. Doulas are there to support you in your desired birth preferences, whether that is a preference for natural, non-medicated, assisted, C-section or anything else.

Certified doulas can also act as a liaison between you and hospital staff regarding your childbirth expectations and preferences. For example, if your preference is to have a non-medicated birth, a doula can help guide you through that process and create a personalized birth plan. A certified doula in Gainesville, GA does not replace medical staff (such as your obstetrician and nurses).

When a surgical procedure is required, there are some situations in which a birth doula can also remain in the operating room, although this is not an expected obligation. A certified birth doula can also assist hospital staff to improve the overall birthing experience. A doula in Gainesville, GA will typically stay with the parents for several hours after birth to help them with birth recovery.

Evidence suggests that a birth doula in Gainesville, GA can help improve parent satisfaction with their baby’s birth and delivery. The involvement of a doula can also lead to shorter deliveries with less complications.

Recent studies show that parents who have a support person like a doula by their side throughout labor and childbirth are more likely to:

  1. Give birth without the need for pain medicine
  2. Describe their birth experience in a positive way
  3. Give birth without the need for medical intervention, such as C-sections or vacuum delivery
  4. Experience a shorter labor

You can hire a doula early in your pregnancy to allow you time to get to know each other and to begin planning for your later trimesters, labor, birth, and aftercare. It is ideal to hire a doula when you are around 20 weeks along, but you can start looking for one before that.

It is never too late to hire a doula in Gainesville, GA; you have right up to your due date to find a doula near you and receive all the benefits of doula support.

While many people think that a doula and a midwife are the same thing, their educational background and job duties are different. Doulas are non-medical professionals who provide emotional, physical and educational support, while also offering actionable advice and guidance to new parents about how to nurture their baby.

A midwife is a certified nurse-midwife (CNM) or a certified midwife (CM). CNMs are medical professionals that are certified and licensed by the American College of Nurse-Midwives. CMs are also certified, but they do not have nursing backgrounds.

Doulas are not medical professionals; they focus on the emotional support for the parents and the family before, during, and after the birth of the baby. Their job is to provide information, advice, and support to the family not diagnose any medical conditions or provide medical advice.
