Lorraine was there for all three of my pregnancies and deliveries. She provided good care for my children and I. She wasn’t overbearing. She gave me what I needed when I needed it. Most of all she made me believe I was capable of everything that is thrown at us in labor. She encourage me to continue on even when I felt overwhelmed.

My own experiences growing a family have profoundly shaped how I practice as a doula. You absolutely need birth education, labor coaching, and evidence-based information. But you also need your doula to encourage you, hold your hand, and give you a warm smile during your hardest moments ahead. I’ve been there… five times over!! And I am passionate about providing my Elgin Doula families with so much more than just pregnancy and birth support. I believe in providing that deep relational encouragement you need as you do the work of welcoming your precious new baby! It would be an honor to join you on this journey! I can’t wait to meet you, Mama! I’m sure we’re going to be fast friends!!

We decided to go the home birth route after researching our options in the early months of pregnancy. Our Midwife gave us a few choices, Daisy was one of them, which we interviewed and ultimately chose Daisy. The main reason was she was so down to earth that I knew she could get along with my fiesty husband and take charge at the same time if something was to go wrong. We also liked the fact that she could still come along with us if we had to go to the hospital to give birth. We were impressed and comforted by her great amount of expertise which we learned from taking one of her virtual child birth classes.

The day of the birth we called Daisy at 2 am and she comforted our anxiety and asked us questions that would help her understand how far we were. As the labor progressed she came over and gave me little exercises like going up and down the Ball and swaying my hips to help move the baby around. She was the one who passed along the info to our midwife of how far along I was.

My midwife came over and 30 minutes later we gave birth to our son. Daisy was there adjusting my pillow, helping me drink water, and encouraging me while I pushed.

After the birth, she checked on us frequently and gave us tidbit of info to help that we still use today. She had herbs for our lotus birth and breastfeeding. I would recommend Daisy to anyone whether home birth or hospital birth to have by your side. We will use her again in the future and wouldn’t think to go elsewhere!-QJ 05/2020

My name is Abigail Johnsen and I live in the Northwest Suburbs of Chicago. I’m married 7 years to myhusband, Josh. We have two wonderful kiddos and an attention-hungry, lovable pup named Marcy. You’ll usually find us reading, watching Netflix, or dancing around the kitchen! I became a Birth Doula because I realized how much I hadn't known what exactly my body could do or even what I needed during the whole process. I wanted to learn and share that knowledge with others too. Birthing bodies are incredible and it is an honor to be able to be a part of your journey.

Addi is a new labor doula on the Chicago Family Doulas team for the summer months (May-August). Originally hailing from Wilmette, she is currently a nursing student at the University of Pittsburgh pursuing labor and delivery nursing. She is trained with DONA as a birth doula and with Maternity Wise Institute as a postpartum doula. Addi provides care using the five arms of doula support: spiritual, mediatorial, physical, emotional, and informational guidance. She is especially knowledgeable on gynecological illnesses and mental health. Addi supports all types of births and knows the inner workings of hospitals well. She has two years of experience as a nursing student, nursing assistant, and patient care technician and has worked on a variety of units including brain injury rehabilitation, cardiology, oncology, and orthopedics. The journey to becoming a doula came after Addi decided to pursue labor and delivery nursing and wanted to gain more experience in the field. Additionally, she has two years of experience caring for infants including those with special needs and chronic illnesses. In her free time, Addi enjoys knitting, going for walks, trying new coffee shops, and reading. She is a student mentor for freshmen at Pitt with disabilities and an incoming volunteer birth doula at Genesis of Pittsburgh. Addi is extremely passionate about her work and looks forward to supporting your family!

Doula Services: FAQs

A doula is a professional that provides emotional, physical and educational support to new parents before, during, and after childbirth and into the early postpartum period. Doulas are companions who strive to give families a safe, positive, and healthy labor experience. They provide parents with evidence-based information and education on childbirth and are someone who the parent can turn to with questions and concerns about having a baby. Doulas also take an active role in collaborating with the parent to create a birth plan.

A certified birth doula offers advice and techniques to help reduce the stress that the parent often experiences during childbirth and provides you with education about different aspects of delivery and labor and what comes after.

When hiring a birth doula in Waukegan, IL, you and your doula will discuss and agree upon a fee structure, and your doula will send you itemized invoices through Meela, which you can pay securely through the app.

Some insurance companies will cover all or part of the cost of hiring a doula. Contact your insurance company to find out if they offer any coverage for hiring a doula; not all insurance companies do.

You can hire two types of doulas in Waukegan, IL: a birth doula and a postpartum doula. The birth doula is during your pregnancy and through the birth of your child. They provide you with emotional, physical and educational support during your pregnancy, your labor and delivery and for the first few hours after your child is born.

A postpartum doula will support you for the first few weeks after the baby is born. They provide in-home assistance, including teaching you how to take care of your newborn, acting as lactation consultant, and can provide some night nanny services.

Yes, a birth doula can provide support during a Cesarean birth and delivery. Doulas are non-medical professionals and do not replace obstetricians, physicians, midwives or nurses. They are an additive member to the team and provide emotional, physical and informational support to the birthing parent, partner and family. It is up to you whether the certified doula can remain in the operating room during the procedure.

When you hire a doula in Waukegan, IL, your services typically include several in-person prenatal sessions, 24/7 phone and text support, full attendance throughout your labor, and several hours of support immediately following your birth.

A doula in Waukegan, IL can help you in any kind of birth. Certified doulas are able to assist parents in creating the ideal “birth environment” and help parents deliver their baby safely. A doula can provide support during the birth whether it occurs in a hospital, a home, or another birth center of some kind. Doulas are there to support you in your desired birth preferences, whether that is a preference for natural, non-medicated, assisted, C-section or anything else.

Certified doulas can also act as a liaison between you and hospital staff regarding your childbirth expectations and preferences. For example, if your preference is to have a non-medicated birth, a doula can help guide you through that process and create a personalized birth plan. A certified doula in Waukegan, IL does not replace medical staff (such as your obstetrician and nurses).

When a surgical procedure is required, there are some situations in which a birth doula can also remain in the operating room, although this is not an expected obligation. A certified birth doula can also assist hospital staff to improve the overall birthing experience. A doula in Waukegan, IL will typically stay with the parents for several hours after birth to help them with birth recovery.

Evidence suggests that a birth doula in Waukegan, IL can help improve parent satisfaction with their baby’s birth and delivery. The involvement of a doula can also lead to shorter deliveries with less complications.

Recent studies show that parents who have a support person like a doula by their side throughout labor and childbirth are more likely to:

  1. Give birth without the need for pain medicine
  2. Describe their birth experience in a positive way
  3. Give birth without the need for medical intervention, such as C-sections or vacuum delivery
  4. Experience a shorter labor

You can hire a doula early in your pregnancy to allow you time to get to know each other and to begin planning for your later trimesters, labor, birth, and aftercare. It is ideal to hire a doula when you are around 20 weeks along, but you can start looking for one before that.

It is never too late to hire a doula in Waukegan, IL; you have right up to your due date to find a doula near you and receive all the benefits of doula support.

While many people think that a doula and a midwife are the same thing, their educational background and job duties are different. Doulas are non-medical professionals who provide emotional, physical and educational support, while also offering actionable advice and guidance to new parents about how to nurture their baby.

A midwife is a certified nurse-midwife (CNM) or a certified midwife (CM). CNMs are medical professionals that are certified and licensed by the American College of Nurse-Midwives. CMs are also certified, but they do not have nursing backgrounds.

Doulas are not medical professionals; they focus on the emotional support for the parents and the family before, during, and after the birth of the baby. Their job is to provide information, advice, and support to the family not diagnose any medical conditions or provide medical advice.
