As a birth doula, I provide emotional and physical support during one of the most vulnerable and life changing moments for a woman and her family. Influenced by my mother's birth story, as well as my very own, it has propelled me into wanting to approach and caress this innocent moment with a gentle touch.

Care philosophy

My goal and vision is that each family I assist have and experience the birth story they so desire. I support, empower, advocate and encourage you in making informed decisions. This is your moment, your baby and your birth story!

Ashante, has been a stellar peer within the medical community, always striving for high quality care that produce amazing patient outcomes. Ashante is someone who never strays away from any patient assignment regardless of how challenging or difficult the assignment may be. If anything she is always resourceful and quick on her feet to advocate for her patients and ensure that patient autonomy is always being maintained and respected. Within the clinical settings that I have worked with Ashante, I have always seen her flourish regardless of what floor we’re on, and she always makes herself available to other nurses and patients for extra help or just to make things run smoother. Ashante is a very compassionate, caring, and skillful with all her patients and really goes above and beyond to individualize care for her patients and really highlights care to the whole family unit and not just the patient. As she states that for proper care and advocacy for an expecting mother, it is not just the mother in the picture but instead it’s the whole family unit that partake in the experience of welcoming a new life to this world.

Ashanti has been a blessing to me and family since I found her. My first pregnancy I didn’t have much support but Ashanti showed up and showed out, she worked with me and made sure I had the support I needed, always. This is the reason why I’ll always choose her to be my doula, as she is my doula again this time around?. Not only is she a great doula, but she’s an awesome mentor and friend. She’ll do anything to make sure her clients feel well supported to the best of her ability and it’s has to be an anointing on her life the way she shows up for her clients all while being a mother herself, a wife, business owner etc (she wears many hats lol). I’m so happy she in my life, one of the best decisions I’ve ever made!

I don't just connect with my clients, I am my clients. I am a hardworking single mom of 3 who had 3 very different birth journeys. I have done work in my community with the focus on perinatal health and lactation especially for BIPOC. I love to meet clients where they are and create a birth or postpartum plan for where they would like to go. With this I am able to support and inform from a place that is tailored to each birth & Postpartum client

Care philosophy

My philosophy is all birthing bodies should be able to birth confidently with the support of information & TLC as they journey into their new chapter. I also believe the support don't just stop at birth, it continues to postpartum and lactation to. That's why my services have been designed to care for families at various stages of their journey

In my personal and professional experience I have come across many families who have had less than ideal situations during pregnancy and birth. I hear about the lack of information and support from the providers side which has encouraged me to become a doula. I know with having knowledge and support birth outcomes can turn into more positive experiences. Part of my practice is to include the family as a whole by looking at the roles, expectations and wants of each person. I whole heartedly feel that mental health and where someone is at in their head impacts their experience. I work with my clients to feel understood and heard.

Care philosophy

I am a mix between holistic care and evidence-based care. I like to mix the "woo" with the science in my practice. I tend to lean towards the caring older sister in my approach and style. I am straightforward with information and will do what I can to make your experience as close to ideal as possible. I also enjoy inserting humor into what I do.

Marissa helped us throughout the entire pregnancy. She was always helpful when we had questions, concerns or worries. I appreciated her willingness to talk through things as they came up. She came to our house and helped my husband and I with our questions and generally helped us prepare mentally and gave us suggestions for physical preparations as well. I also appreciated her support post partum as well, which I didn’t realize was going to be as difficult as it was. It was helpful to have a voice of reason, and experience through it.
    We highly recommend Marissa!

After birthing three children within a time span of five years, I couldn't help but recognize how overwhelming pregnancy, childbirth and parenting in general can be. I also had an unfavorable birthing experience with my first child. I was young, under-supported with financially limited options and felt "under-qualified" to be part of labor and delivery decision making. I simply left everything up to my obstetrician. I was told what to do and what not to do, what to take, where to go and even when to push. I was rarely asked for consent, but rather told what they were doing to me as they decided to do it. It all felt so clinical, almost as if I was in the hospital due to an illness rather than a healthy, natural event. I felt lonely, helpless and scared for three days straight. Needless to say, the experience left me wondering what could have been done differently and what choices each pregnant mother has to create a more positive birthing experience. The moment I discovered doula work, it gave me a sense of relief learning that our society has a support system specially geared for the mother to be guided and assisted through this journey. I personally feel that our culture has brainwashed us to believe that childbirth is simply a painful burden to endure. (Cue television and movie clips where the laboring woman is screaming bloody murder and everyone is rushing around her as if there is a scary emergency to be remedied.) However, with the right knowledge and support, there can be such beauty and empowerment that comes with knowing all of your choices and feeling in control while fully trusting that your body has the capability and the strength to do exactly what it's meant to do - create new life and make miracles happen.

Care philosophy

I am passionate about childbirth and I work hard to ensure that my clients have a positive and memorable birth experience however they may envision that to look like. My goal is for you to feel informed, respected and for your voice to be heard by your birthing team in your chosen birth environment.

Doula Services: FAQs

A doula is a professional that provides emotional, physical and educational support to new parents before, during, and after childbirth and into the early postpartum period. Doulas are companions who strive to give families a safe, positive, and healthy labor experience. They provide parents with evidence-based information and education on childbirth and are someone who the parent can turn to with questions and concerns about having a baby. Doulas also take an active role in collaborating with the parent to create a birth plan.

A certified birth doula offers advice and techniques to help reduce the stress that the parent often experiences during childbirth and provides you with education about different aspects of delivery and labor and what comes after.

There are two ways you can hire a doula through Meela in Shelton, CT.

You can browse through the available doulas in Shelton, CT and send the doulas you are interested in a message, introducing yourself and setting up an interview. We recommend interviewing at least three before hiring your top doula.

You can also hire a doula in Shelton, CT in three easy steps:

  1. Post a job for free: answer some questions and receive responses from top-rated doulas in Shelton, CT. It takes less than 30 seconds to post your job.
  1. Get your list of Shelton, CT doulas: in a few hours, you will have a collection of doulas near you who are qualified to meet your needs. You can compare pricing, experience and read reviews. You can chat with each doula to learn more about them.
  1. Hire a doula with confidence: schedule virtual or in-person interviews with your top doula choices. Hire your top doula and start getting the care you deserve.

While the cost of a doula can vary based on experience and the services offered, you can expect the average cost of a doula in Shelton, CT to be $933, which is the average cost of a doula in the state of Connecticut. The cost of a doula in Shelton, CT can range from $758 to $1,107. These costs are based on a representative group of 100 doulas surveyed by Meela across the state of Connecticut. The average cost of a doula in Connecticut is about the same as the U.S. national average cost of a doula, which is $971.

When hiring a birth doula in Shelton, CT, you and your doula will discuss and agree upon a fee structure, and your doula will send you itemized invoices through Meela, which you can pay securely through the app.

Some insurance companies will cover all or part of the cost of hiring a doula. Contact your insurance company to find out if they offer any coverage for hiring a doula; not all insurance companies do.

You can hire two types of doulas in Shelton, CT: a birth doula and a postpartum doula. The birth doula is during your pregnancy and through the birth of your child. They provide you with emotional, physical and educational support during your pregnancy, your labor and delivery and for the first few hours after your child is born.

A postpartum doula will support you for the first few weeks after the baby is born. They provide in-home assistance, including teaching you how to take care of your newborn, acting as lactation consultant, and can provide some night nanny services.

Yes, a birth doula can provide support during a Cesarean birth and delivery. Doulas are non-medical professionals and do not replace obstetricians, physicians, midwives or nurses. They are an additive member to the team and provide emotional, physical and informational support to the birthing parent, partner and family. It is up to you whether the certified doula can remain in the operating room during the procedure.

When you hire a doula in Shelton, CT, your services typically include several in-person prenatal sessions, 24/7 phone and text support, full attendance throughout your labor, and several hours of support immediately following your birth.

A doula in Shelton, CT can help you in any kind of birth. Certified doulas are able to assist parents in creating the ideal “birth environment” and help parents deliver their baby safely. A doula can provide support during the birth whether it occurs in a hospital, a home, or another birth center of some kind. Doulas are there to support you in your desired birth preferences, whether that is a preference for natural, non-medicated, assisted, C-section or anything else.

Certified doulas can also act as a liaison between you and hospital staff regarding your childbirth expectations and preferences. For example, if your preference is to have a non-medicated birth, a doula can help guide you through that process and create a personalized birth plan. A certified doula in Shelton, CT does not replace medical staff (such as your obstetrician and nurses).

When a surgical procedure is required, there are some situations in which a birth doula can also remain in the operating room, although this is not an expected obligation. A certified birth doula can also assist hospital staff to improve the overall birthing experience. A doula in Shelton, CT will typically stay with the parents for several hours after birth to help them with birth recovery.

Evidence suggests that a birth doula in Shelton, CT can help improve parent satisfaction with their baby’s birth and delivery. The involvement of a doula can also lead to shorter deliveries with less complications.

Recent studies show that parents who have a support person like a doula by their side throughout labor and childbirth are more likely to:

  1. Give birth without the need for pain medicine
  2. Describe their birth experience in a positive way
  3. Give birth without the need for medical intervention, such as C-sections or vacuum delivery
  4. Experience a shorter labor

You can hire a doula early in your pregnancy to allow you time to get to know each other and to begin planning for your later trimesters, labor, birth, and aftercare. It is ideal to hire a doula when you are around 20 weeks along, but you can start looking for one before that.

It is never too late to hire a doula in Shelton, CT; you have right up to your due date to find a doula near you and receive all the benefits of doula support.

While many people think that a doula and a midwife are the same thing, their educational background and job duties are different. Doulas are non-medical professionals who provide emotional, physical and educational support, while also offering actionable advice and guidance to new parents about how to nurture their baby.

A midwife is a certified nurse-midwife (CNM) or a certified midwife (CM). CNMs are medical professionals that are certified and licensed by the American College of Nurse-Midwives. CMs are also certified, but they do not have nursing backgrounds.

Doulas are not medical professionals; they focus on the emotional support for the parents and the family before, during, and after the birth of the baby. Their job is to provide information, advice, and support to the family not diagnose any medical conditions or provide medical advice.
