Mayra was our doula for the birth of both of our children. She really got to know me during my pregnancy and what our values were around childbirth. She thoughtfully helped us come up with our birth plan and was a reassuring presence during the ups and downs of pregnancy and childbirth. She was really able to communicate well with me, my partner, and the hospital team during the birth. We built a lot of trust with Mayra and worked with her again during my second pregnancy. We were able to have empowered natural births both times and I am so grateful to Mayra for her support in making that happen. I couldn’t have done it without her.

I am a fully trained and specialized Post-Partum Doula for the Chicago/Bronzeville/Homewood Area. I received my training through the well know DONA International Organization, and have worked with many infants and children prior to my Doula training. I was drawn to the Doula community after helping a friend through a difficult pregnancy because I saw the value of assisting a mom through what could be a difficult, confusing, but ultimately rewarding and joyous time of their lives. I have been working in the Post-Partum Doula role for the past two years and can provide multiple testimonies from families that I have worked with and cared for during their post-partum stages. I am here to assist you through this wondrous stage of your families' life and I am trained and educated to assist with breastfeeding/lactation, sleep, meal preparation, and more! I will be there to support your family with the ultimate goal that your family will continue to flourish once I'm gone armed with valuable resources and knowledge that will serve you for years to come.

Care philosophy

While I have not been fortunate enough to be a mother myself, I have helped many mothers and mother-like figures in the past. I believe in giving assistance to *all* walks of life, no matter your identity or status. Infant care can be difficult without help and I believe in giving families the relief they need and deserve so that they can live their best and most fulfilling parenting experience.

This is my 2nd birth, first home birth. Mikala has a very gentle personality, immediately felt at home with her. Pre delivery she followed up with me often, always asked what questions I had, in addition to providing her wisdom on typical pregnancy concerns or discomforts. Mikala listened to the type of birth I envisioned and respected my wishes the whole way. She has become like family. I couldn’t have wished for a better experience.

Rebekkah was an incredible partner leading up to and during the birth of our son with her calming presence and evidence-based approach. I can say without a doubt that our birth experience would not have been possible without her coaching. She also photographed our birth – the pictures turned out incredible and will be cherished for years to come.

We also hired her for postpartum support as we adjusted to life as new parents. We initially looked forward to her nights so we could get sleep, but the added bonus was seeing the little things she did to care for our son. She has a vast toolkit of tricks as someone who works with many children, and we picked up a lot of good tips as first time parents. She would also share recommendations for other providers depending on what we were wrestling with that week (e.g. lactation, pediatric dentists, bodywork). There’s no manual that comes with a newborn, but Rebekkah made for a viable and helpful alternative.

If (and when) we do it all over again, Rebekkah will be my first call. Anyone would be lucky to have her by their side for pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum.

We decided to go the home birth route after researching our options in the early months of pregnancy. Our Midwife gave us a few choices, Daisy was one of them, which we interviewed and ultimately chose Daisy. The main reason was she was so down to earth that I knew she could get along with my fiesty husband and take charge at the same time if something was to go wrong. We also liked the fact that she could still come along with us if we had to go to the hospital to give birth. We were impressed and comforted by her great amount of expertise which we learned from taking one of her virtual child birth classes.

The day of the birth we called Daisy at 2 am and she comforted our anxiety and asked us questions that would help her understand how far we were. As the labor progressed she came over and gave me little exercises like going up and down the Ball and swaying my hips to help move the baby around. She was the one who passed along the info to our midwife of how far along I was.

My midwife came over and 30 minutes later we gave birth to our son. Daisy was there adjusting my pillow, helping me drink water, and encouraging me while I pushed.

After the birth, she checked on us frequently and gave us tidbit of info to help that we still use today. She had herbs for our lotus birth and breastfeeding. I would recommend Daisy to anyone whether home birth or hospital birth to have by your side. We will use her again in the future and wouldn’t think to go elsewhere!-QJ 05/2020

I decided to become a postpartum doula because of the doulas' role to nurture the mother in the postpartum period. I was blessed to be present for 3 of my 5 nephews births and being present for the 4th trimester for my sister in law. I saw a great need for nurturing and support for them and the entire family during that time and it motivated me to become a postpartum doula.

Care philosophy

My goals as a birth professional are to be a lifelong learner and to challenge myself in ways so that I can become the best doula I can be for my clients.

A postpartum doula in Elgin, IL is meant to help the entire family and their role is not just limited to the birthing parent and newborn. A doula provides physical and emotional support to parents and siblings, but they also offer information and advice regarding how to feed, bathe, swaddle, and soothe the baby.

They also often help with postpartum depression issues, and are considered child care “consultants” rather than medical professionals. Many postpartum doulas in Elgin, IL offer a range of services that can help with parents trying to adjust to a newborn child. These services often include:

  • Sibling care
  • Assist with household chores
  • Parent-baby bonding
  • Physical and emotional recovery
  • Support to parents and extended family

A postpartum doula in Elgin, IL can have a lasting positive impact on a family and help them feel more confident about their parenting role and the way that they feed and nurture their baby. They might offer advice regarding feeding, bathing, and parent-baby bonding.

It is important to note that a postpartum doula might offer advice but is not expected to provide medical care of any kind or serve as a replacement to an accredited physician. Postpartum doulas are also not qualified to prescribe medication.

Many new parents want to know about certified postpartum doulas and how exactly they are certified. Since the demand for postpartum doulas has greatly expanded in the last several years, the number of reputable postpartum doula training and certification programs has grown in Elgin, IL. Training criteria can differ from program to program, but most follow a similar curriculum which includes core academic curriculum and practical hours and real-life care experience.

One of the most common national postpartum doula training certifications comes from DONA International. A postpartum doula usually receives about 27 hours of practical training before they are a certified postpartum doula.

There are also CAPPA-certified postpartum doulas in Elgin, IL, as well. These doulas were certified by the Childbirth and Postpartum Professional Association, an international organization that certifies doulas and other childbirth educators/professionals.

As a reminder, because postpartum doulas are not trained to be a medical professional and diagnose and treat medical conditions, a certification is not required for them to practice.

As their names suggest, a birth doula’s main priority is to provide support services before, during and in the moments immediately after childbirth. A postpartum doula’s obligations usually begin after the birth, for several weeks or months. In many cases, your birth doula will also be a trained and certified postpartum doula, which can provide a continuity of care that many parents find extremely valuable.

Many parents want to know whether a postpartum doula or a baby nurse would meet their needs and expectations. A baby nurse might be focused on making sure that a baby sleeps or feeds properly, but that might be the extent of their role. A postpartum doula generally offers more holistic services for their clients.

A postpartum doula in Elgin, IL is expected to be more involved with the family as a whole. They might remain involved in sibling care or also provide emotional support to the partner as both parents adjust to becoming new parents. This may even include support for older siblings, light housework, and even meal prep. A postpartum doula provides more physical, emotional, and informational support than a baby nurse.

You can hire two types of doulas in Elgin, IL: a birth doula and a postpartum doula. The birth doula is during your pregnancy and through the birth of your child. They provide you with emotional, physical and educational support during your pregnancy, your labor and delivery and for the first few hours after your child is born.

A postpartum doula will support you for the first few weeks after the baby is born. They provide in-home assistance, including teaching you how to take care of your newborn, acting as lactation consultant, and can provide some night nanny services.
