Prenatal Support: I typically begin during the prenatal period. I meet with expectant individuals and their families to establish a relationship, discuss birth preferences, and provide educational resources. I can assist in creating a birth plan, addressing any concerns or fears, and offering guidance on various aspects of pregnancy, including nutrition, exercise, and relaxation techniques. Labor and Birth Support: A central role for me is to provide continuous support during labor and birth. I am available to individuals throughout the entire process, offering physical comfort measures, emotional reassurance, and advocacy. I can also help with pain management techniques, suggest position changes, provide massage (as I am a trained and experienced massage therapist) or other forms of relaxation, and offer encouragement. I work alongside the birthing person's support team, which may include partners, family members, or healthcare professionals. Information and Education: I provide evidence-based information to help individuals make informed decisions about their care. I explain medical procedures, discuss the benefits and risks, and offer resources for further research. I aim to empower individuals by equipping them with the knowledge they need to advocate for themselves and make choices that align with their values and preferences. Emotional Support: I understand the emotional journey of pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period as I am a mother of 8. I provide emotional support by creating a safe and non-judgmental space for individuals to express their feelings, fears, and concerns. I offer validation, reassurance, and a listening ear, helping individuals navigate the emotional ups and downs that can arise during this transformative time. Postpartum Care: My support often extends into the postpartum period. I provide assistance with breastfeeding, newborn care, and emotional adjustment. I help with understanding infant feeding cues, offer guidance on soothing techniques, and provide resources for postpartum recovery. I also play a role in supporting the emotional well-being of the new parent, recognizing the challenges that can arise during this transition. Collaborative Approach: I work collaboratively with healthcare providers, respecting their expertise and establishing good communication. I strive to create a positive and respectful environment where everyone on the birthing team can work together to support the individual's needs and preferences.

Care philosophy

My philosophy as a doula centers around providing continuous emotional, physical, and informational support to individuals and families during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. I believe in empowering and advocating for the birthing person, as I strive to enhance the overall birth experience by ensuring that individuals feel respected, informed, and supported.

I’m Katy Gladwin, I’m a mother, wife, doula, wellness coach, childbirth educator, woman advocate, medical advocate, and activist of various sorts. I have been providing doula services for mothers in the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti area for over 7 years, and have attended over 100 births. I have a passion for supporting women have healthy pregnancies that lead to beautiful births and healthy babies and children. Over the years, I have had the privilege to witness the vast spectrum of normal birth. I trust a woman’s body to birth her baby if allowed to move through the physiological process unhindered. However, in our busy and intense world, actually attaining the environment for birth to work best is hard to do. I see my job as first, creating and supporting an environment that can carry a mother through birth, feeling supported and allowing her body to open as it’s made to do. I then, use my knowledge and experience to ease the mind and body of the laboring person, as well as the rest of the birth team.

Care philosophy

I founded Sacred Roots in 2011 with the goal of reclaiming birth as a physiological process that works. Since then, I’ve been helping women and families vision their ideal experience, and then working toward a plan to best achieve that vision. With the right information and support, your birth and transition to parenthood can be thoroughly empowered and beautiful. I look forward to meeting you!

I came to Katy at 7 months pregnant, full of fear and questions. Each time my husband and I met with her, we grew more informed and more confident. By the time my due date came, we felt unexpectedly ready for first-time parents. We felt reassured to have someone to call for support when it was time to deliver our little one.

I, one hundred percent, attribute Katy’s guidance to the very smooth delivery with my first child. She is a helpful medium between hospital and natural birth, and because of this I was able to seamlessly combine the benefits of both. Also, the postpartum care that Katy offers is invaluable as the medical system often provides little support for the mother to deal with the magnitude of postpartum recovery. Katy is calm, thoughtful and wicked smart.

The most important thing I gained from my experience with using Katy as my doula was that I felt in control of my own decisions during a confusing time, that could otherwise feel very chaotic. I consider it the best money ever spent to bring our daughter into this world with the support of Katy by our side.

Just as no two people are the same, no two births are the same either. That’s why I am committed to helping families navigate the healthcare system and understand the process of labor and birth. I am a trained birth doula, a member of DONA International, and a Certified Lactation Counselor through the ALPP. I love learning new skills and constantly strive to further my education. My own experiences with motherhood have taught me the importance of listening to your body and your own intuition, as well as the necessity to advocate for women’s rights - especially during childbirth. Whether you’re a first-time birther or a seasoned mom, you need a knowledgeable support person in your corner. As your doula, I bring skills and knowledge to the birth team that no one else can offer. I want to help you feel confident and autonomous by providing you with evidence-based information as well as empathy and space-holding, so that you can make the best informed decisions for your body, your baby, and your birth. Sliding scale pricing available. Michigan Medicaid approved.

Care philosophy

How you give birth matters. Research tells us that parents remember the birth of their children for their entire lives, right down to the smallest details. What happens during childbirth can also have long-lasting effects on self esteem, self confidence, and parenting. I can help you get clear about your desires and find your own voice, so you can give birth on your terms.

Honey Bee Births actually stemmed from an experience of loss. I have no living children but have given birth and know first hand how intimidating it can feel. After having my son, I found a bereavement doula that helped me work through my grief. She was incredible. Just her presence made me feel calm and supported and that sparked my interest in doula services. Then, I started the process to become a certified birth doula and I have fallen in love with helping pregnant people become confident with their bodies! I am just as invested in your birth as you are. Working with you through your labor and ending the day watching you interact with your sweet new addition fills me with such JOY. I truly feel like I have found my calling with this job. I am mainly a prenatal, labor and birth doula- providing services to clients at the start of labor and seeing them through to when baby comes! I block my schedule out for two weeks before and after your due date to make sure I am available for you! I also provide bereavement services, if needed, to those who experience loss.

Care philosophy

My #1 goal is to empower you to feel confident, informed, safe, and supported during your birth experience. Birth is never a scripted adventure and can cause unwanted anxiety, so I strive to be the friendly and warm presence that never leaves your side!

Grateful. I am beyond grateful. Elizabeth helped me through the breathing and contracting, the stress, the fear with an emergency C-section, and through the exhaustion. She was involved the perfect amount and was professional. Her suggestions helped tremendously! A big deal to me, is that She cared. She asked questions that I didn’t, she asked for things I wouldn’t have to make me more comfortable. She even came back to the hospital and met my little one after we settled! And I was an hour away! She captured memorable pictures for us, like this profile picture! Again, grateful. So grateful! She is amazing!

My birthwork is strictly prenatal spiritual security + support. Using shamanic technologies indigenous to my People, I work both with and for spirits of the Unborn as they are in the spiritual realm, coming down into the womb, and then birthed (if desired). Through pre-pregnancy and pregnancy arsenals, as well as à la carte arsenals, I offer a collection of monthly services for families to help make sure that babies are comfortable enough to come into this world, and that parents are re-strengthening their relationships to their Ancestors as well. It will be listed below that I provide doula services, however the platform lacks options for me to list my own offerings. Though at times our work may overlap, this work does not inherently replace the need for doulas or midwives. Please simply see my website for more details!

Care philosophy

All priority goes to Black birthgivers. Then also allowing space for non-Black clients of color. We're here to make sure that all lineages under these communities are committed to Black life and adamantly rejecting anti-Blackness at all costs. Through any interactions with the babies' spirits and Ancestors, we strive to ensure that no matter what the situation is, these morals are kept.

Hi! My name is Shaina, I am I wife, mother and ice cream lover. I also am a birth and postpartum doula in the metro Detroit area. My Doula journey began when I decided to have a doula at both of the births of my children. I had an amazing experience and decided I wanted to provide the same care for other families. I am new to the birth world, but am oh so passionate and take my role very seriously. I pride myself in being very knowledgeable on different ways to support families through birth. Acupressure, counter pressure, meditation, conscious breathing, massage, and rebozo techniques are just a few of the tricks up my sleeve to help you through your labor. I’d love to chat with you about how I can best serve you. I can’t wait to see your family Blossom & Bloom!

Care philosophy

I tailor my care to the specific need of the birthing couple I am serving. Everyone is different, and birth is unpredictable so there is no one size fits all approach to my care. I will make suggestions but will ultimately follow your lead on how you’d like to be cared for.

Doula Services: FAQs

A doula is a professional that provides emotional, physical and educational support to new parents before, during, and after childbirth and into the early postpartum period. Doulas are companions who strive to give families a safe, positive, and healthy labor experience. They provide parents with evidence-based information and education on childbirth and are someone who the parent can turn to with questions and concerns about having a baby. Doulas also take an active role in collaborating with the parent to create a birth plan.

A certified birth doula offers advice and techniques to help reduce the stress that the parent often experiences during childbirth and provides you with education about different aspects of delivery and labor and what comes after.

There are two ways you can hire a doula through Meela in Westland, MI.

You can browse through the available doulas in Westland, MI and send the doulas you are interested in a message, introducing yourself and setting up an interview. We recommend interviewing at least three before hiring your top doula.

You can also hire a doula in Westland, MI in three easy steps:

  1. Post a job for free: answer some questions and receive responses from top-rated doulas in Westland, MI. It takes less than 30 seconds to post your job.
  1. Get your list of Westland, MI doulas: in a few hours, you will have a collection of doulas near you who are qualified to meet your needs. You can compare pricing, experience and read reviews. You can chat with each doula to learn more about them.
  1. Hire a doula with confidence: schedule virtual or in-person interviews with your top doula choices. Hire your top doula and start getting the care you deserve.

While the cost of a doula can vary based on experience and the services offered, you can expect the average cost of a doula in Westland, MI to be $924, which is the average cost of a doula in the state of Michigan. The cost of a doula in Westland, MI can range from $721 to $1,126. These costs are based on a representative group of 48 doulas surveyed by Meela across the state of Michigan. The average cost of a doula in Michigan is about the same as the U.S. national average cost of a doula, which is $971.

When hiring a birth doula in Westland, MI, you and your doula will discuss and agree upon a fee structure, and your doula will send you itemized invoices through Meela, which you can pay securely through the app.

Some insurance companies will cover all or part of the cost of hiring a doula. Contact your insurance company to find out if they offer any coverage for hiring a doula; not all insurance companies do.

You can hire two types of doulas in Westland, MI: a birth doula and a postpartum doula. The birth doula is during your pregnancy and through the birth of your child. They provide you with emotional, physical and educational support during your pregnancy, your labor and delivery and for the first few hours after your child is born.

A postpartum doula will support you for the first few weeks after the baby is born. They provide in-home assistance, including teaching you how to take care of your newborn, acting as lactation consultant, and can provide some night nanny services.

Yes, a birth doula can provide support during a Cesarean birth and delivery. Doulas are non-medical professionals and do not replace obstetricians, physicians, midwives or nurses. They are an additive member to the team and provide emotional, physical and informational support to the birthing parent, partner and family. It is up to you whether the certified doula can remain in the operating room during the procedure.

When you hire a doula in Westland, MI, your services typically include several in-person prenatal sessions, 24/7 phone and text support, full attendance throughout your labor, and several hours of support immediately following your birth.

A doula in Westland, MI can help you in any kind of birth. Certified doulas are able to assist parents in creating the ideal “birth environment” and help parents deliver their baby safely. A doula can provide support during the birth whether it occurs in a hospital, a home, or another birth center of some kind. Doulas are there to support you in your desired birth preferences, whether that is a preference for natural, non-medicated, assisted, C-section or anything else.

Certified doulas can also act as a liaison between you and hospital staff regarding your childbirth expectations and preferences. For example, if your preference is to have a non-medicated birth, a doula can help guide you through that process and create a personalized birth plan. A certified doula in Westland, MI does not replace medical staff (such as your obstetrician and nurses).

When a surgical procedure is required, there are some situations in which a birth doula can also remain in the operating room, although this is not an expected obligation. A certified birth doula can also assist hospital staff to improve the overall birthing experience. A doula in Westland, MI will typically stay with the parents for several hours after birth to help them with birth recovery.

Evidence suggests that a birth doula in Westland, MI can help improve parent satisfaction with their baby’s birth and delivery. The involvement of a doula can also lead to shorter deliveries with less complications.

Recent studies show that parents who have a support person like a doula by their side throughout labor and childbirth are more likely to:

  1. Give birth without the need for pain medicine
  2. Describe their birth experience in a positive way
  3. Give birth without the need for medical intervention, such as C-sections or vacuum delivery
  4. Experience a shorter labor

You can hire a doula early in your pregnancy to allow you time to get to know each other and to begin planning for your later trimesters, labor, birth, and aftercare. It is ideal to hire a doula when you are around 20 weeks along, but you can start looking for one before that.

It is never too late to hire a doula in Westland, MI; you have right up to your due date to find a doula near you and receive all the benefits of doula support.

While many people think that a doula and a midwife are the same thing, their educational background and job duties are different. Doulas are non-medical professionals who provide emotional, physical and educational support, while also offering actionable advice and guidance to new parents about how to nurture their baby.

A midwife is a certified nurse-midwife (CNM) or a certified midwife (CM). CNMs are medical professionals that are certified and licensed by the American College of Nurse-Midwives. CMs are also certified, but they do not have nursing backgrounds.

Doulas are not medical professionals; they focus on the emotional support for the parents and the family before, during, and after the birth of the baby. Their job is to provide information, advice, and support to the family not diagnose any medical conditions or provide medical advice.
