am Mariah Prodan. I am a mother to a beautiful and brave 3-year-old daughter, who I breast fed for 11 months. I am a DONA trained who is working towards certification. I am also VBAC certified by theVBACline. I decided to become a doula when my baby sister expressed the desire for a natural birth with her first baby in April. I volunteered to be her doula and signed up for classes the next day. I now know from my own birth experience how important doula support is, I did not have the support of a doula during my covid delivery. A doula would have made all the difference and prevented my epidural. I have been a fulltime Registered Nurse since 2017 with the majority of my background in Critical Care. My career has left me with. I currently work in surgical recovery where most of my focus is on preventing and treating post operative pain through various comfort measures. As a doula my goal is to provide education to alleviate anxiety and stress during delivery. Labor is unpredictable but there is power in understanding and knowing what is normal. I provide my knowledge and expertise to assist and empower during labor. I also work to sooth the pains of labor through various comfort measures while providing emotional support.

Care philosophy

Care for all. Women empowering women. A doula for every person who wants one. Families are at the center of doula care and the rest just falls into place.

I became interested in birth education and support shortly after the birth of my son in 2019. I started out wanting to become a childbirth educator but after the birth of my daughter and experience with my own doula in 2022, I knew I had to become a doula as well. So, I started Ebb and Flow Birth Co. to help support and empower women and families through conception, pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

Care philosophy

I believe that the mother is in charge of her birth. She should feel empowered and respected in her birth choices. I am an advocate for birth choice, autonomy, and true informed consent.

I was Hannah’s birth doula before she decided to pursue doula education. She prepared for her VBAC birth with intensity. She was well-read and educated. She was passionate about all things birth related. During her birth she was able to walk her talk and she did it! After that nothing could stop her. She was so driven to become a doula and educator so she could help other women to achieve their goals. She will be a great birth professional.

Aubrey has been empowering families as a Doula since 2011. As a military spouse, Aubrey has attended births all over the country and has supported a wide variety of birthing situations and locations. Her 12 years of invaluable experience includes supporting active duty Military families in Missouri, North Carolina, Texas & Indiana and serving low/no income families through nonprofit Doula organizations in Missouri (The Doula Foundation) and Texas (San Antonio Birth Doulas). Aubrey’s journey to become a doula began when she was pregnant in 2010. She began to really educate herself on all things relating to birth in order to prepare for the water-birth of her now daughter. In doing so, a spark was ignited within her and she knew she had found her passion as a doula. In 2011, she suffered a pulmonary embolism caused by the use of hormonal birth control. While recovering, she kick started her doula career to help women become well informed of their decisions before, during, and after pregnancy.

Care philosophy

As a doula, her main goal is to help empower families to make informed decisions. No matter what a family envisions for the birth of their baby, Aubrey wants them to enter into parenthood feeling knowledgeable, supported, and at peace with how the birth unfolded.

I am a birth doula trained through DONA International. I love working with birthing people, especially first time parents, and have had the pleasure of working with the Nurse Family Partnership (NFP) Goodwill of Southern and Central Indiana doula program. Through this program, I got to work with birthing people from different backgrounds and experiences in Indiana at no cost to my clients. I am also a PhD student in the Anthropology Department at Purdue University. My dissertation work focuses on the anthropology of doula work, midwifery, and home birth. In fact, graduate school is what inspired me to become a doula! I wanted to both study birth and have practical, hands-on experience, as well as provide a useful service to birthing people during labor and childbirth. Due to this, I bring both an academic and personal perspective to my doula work.

Care philosophy

I believe that everyone should have the birth experience that best fits them, whether that be in the hospital, at home, or at a birth center. As a birth doula and a maternal health researcher, I believe in both an personal and physiological approach to pregnancy and childbirth. I am especially passionate about working with first-time parents.

Madison considers every aspect of the mother and baby in her work. The way I look at pregnancy, birth and postpartum has completely changed after learning from her and receiving her care. I am so much more empowered, knowledgeable, and confident for my second pregnancy. I’m hoping she will be my doula again! I wouldn’t want to give birth without her by my side.

I have been a doula for over 11 years and have served more than 270 families, some of them multiple times. I became a doula to create positive birth memories for parents. To help parents understand what to expect and rid them of the misconceptions and fears. To relieve the unfair amount of pressure put on Moms and Dads through this process focused maternity journey. To eliminate unnecessary interventions and re-enforcing informed consent. Birth is not "ABC", let a doula help. The more people who know and learn about doulas, the bigger impact we can make on positive maternal and baby outcomes in the world of birth.

Care philosophy

Doulas serve such an important role in pregnancy, labor, birth and postpartum. We serve to compensate for this "gap" where it is underestimated what labor will involve and over estimated what maternity care will provide. We live in this gap and educate and advocate to bring positive birth experiences to parents. A doula's confidence about birth is passed on to the pregnant mother to empower.

My husband and I found Shelby through the Community Health Network doula program, and we couldn’t have found a more perfect match for us! I wanted to avoid all interventions and experience the most natural birth possible, while keeping my health and baby’s health absolute priority. Although the birth experience didn’t go exactly as we had hoped, Shelby provided support and love throughout the process. Before labor and delivery, she was available at any time of day to answer my questions. During labor and delivery, Shelby helped me find the most comfortable positions, provided massage, and coached my husband so that he was able to support me even better than he already was. Shelby provided us with a birth story a few days later with details about my son’s birth that I will forever cherish. I highly recommend Shelby to any mom hoping for a natural birth and to any couple that seeks the excellent care and the unwavering love and support that Shelby demonstrated during my birth experience.

Doula Services: FAQs

A doula is a professional that provides emotional, physical and educational support to new parents before, during, and after childbirth and into the early postpartum period. They provide parents with evidence-based information and education on childbirth and are someone who the parent can turn to with questions and concerns about having a baby. Doulas also take an active role in collaborating with the parent to create a birth plan.

A certified birth doula offers advice and techniques to help reduce the stress that the parent often experiences during childbirth and provides you with education about different aspects of delivery and labor and what comes after.

They provide you with emotional, physical and educational support during your pregnancy, your labor and delivery and for the first few hours after your child is born.

It is up to you whether the certified doula can remain in the operating room during the procedure.

Doulas are there to support you in your desired birth preferences, whether that is a preference for natural, non-medicated, assisted, C-section or anything else.

Certified doulas can also act as a liaison between you and hospital staff regarding your childbirth expectations and preferences. For example, if your preference is to have a non-medicated birth, a doula can help guide you through that process and create a personalized birth plan. A certified doula in Kokomo, IN does not replace medical staff (such as your obstetrician and nurses).

When a surgical procedure is required, there are some situations in which a birth doula can also remain in the operating room, although this is not an expected obligation. A certified birth doula can also assist hospital staff to improve the overall birthing experience. A doula in Kokomo, IN will typically stay with the parents for several hours after birth to help them with birth recovery.

Recent studies show that parents who have a support person like a doula by their side throughout labor and childbirth are more likely to:

  1. Give birth without the need for pain medicine
  2. Describe their birth experience in a positive way
  3. Give birth without the need for medical intervention, such as C-sections or vacuum delivery
  4. Experience a shorter labor

You can hire a doula early in your pregnancy to allow you time to get to know each other and to begin planning for your later trimesters, labor, birth, and aftercare. It is ideal to hire a doula when you are around 20 weeks along, but you can start looking for one before that.

It is never too late to hire a doula in Kokomo, IN; you have right up to your due date to find a doula near you and receive all the benefits of doula support.

While many people think that a doula and a midwife are the same thing, their educational background and job duties are different. Doulas are non-medical professionals who provide emotional, physical and educational support, while also offering actionable advice and guidance to new parents about how to nurture their baby.

A midwife is a certified nurse-midwife (CNM) or a certified midwife (CM). CNMs are medical professionals that are certified and licensed by the American College of Nurse-Midwives. CMs are also certified, but they do not have nursing backgrounds.

Doulas are not medical professionals; they focus on the emotional support for the parents and the family before, during, and after the birth of the baby. Their job is to provide information, advice, and support to the family not diagnose any medical conditions or provide medical advice.
