Jessica was a huge help to us during the birth of my first and second child. We hired her for both birth & postpartum, for both kids.
Originally, we had only signed up for birth for the first one, but I ended up in an unplanned C-section, so she offered to help out for the first few nights. I was home. Long story short, I couldn’t let go lol.
Jessica always make sure my kitchen was clean every morning when I woke up. She washed all nursing and pumping parts, she did all diaper changes and feedings, and when it was time for her to go, she just handed me the monitor and left.
She is very communicative and attentive. I can tell she is very passionate about her career choice. She is a safe space for me and my husband during such a pivotal moment in our lives. We love Jessica and are happy to recommend her to any family.

I started a crash course of parenting as a bonus mom and then, was blessed with the experience in my own pregnancy and birth. Through my doula training and in witnessing my sister have a beautiful birth, I was able to acknowledge just how traumatic my own pregnancy and birth experiences were. My induction, over a day of laboring, and hours of unsuccessful pushing led to an emergency cesarean. I was terrified and was unprepared, so I am dedicated to ensuring this does not happen to my clients and that they have the opportunity to plan their birthing journey.

Care philosophy

I wish to give you an uplifting and inclusive experience, free from discrimination and mental health stigma. I strive to create a space that will help you feel actively listened to and emotionally supported.

I started supporting families in 2019 and have provided countless massages, meals and newborn care to help mothers recover, sleep and breastfeed their newborns. I give lactation education prenatally as well as hands on help in the first days to avoid nipple pain and ensure a deep latching and efficient transfer of milk. My cooking looks like weekly meal preparation in the form of 3 - 4 dinners a week, home made bone broth, large batches of tea infusions, lactation muffins and grab and go breakfast and snack options. I offer Ayurvedic massage with warming oils on a portable massage table in the home or modified versions in the bed. I offer belly binding, baby wearing education, sleep education, postpartum nutrition education and mental health screenings. I do laundry, wash dishes and provide newborn care so families can sleep or work from home.

Care philosophy

I believe all mothers deserve a lying in time. I am passionate about lactation and am working towards a CLC. Sleep is crucial to recovery and coping with stress. I help families figure out what sleep practices work best for them. I am a postpartum chef with a large catalogue of recipes centered around postpartum nutrition that aids in faster recovery and optimal supply.

Hannah helped me immensely before and after the birth of my second child. She was the push I needed to actually perform self-care, especially with a toddler running around. She helped me prepare baths and steams, brought me teas and broth, was partner in stretching and yoga, and went on slow healing walks with me. Hannah helped me through a round of mastitis and introduced me to new kinds of postpartum care, even as a second time mom.

I’m addition to being knowledgeable, punctual, and proactive, Hannah is warm, practical, understanding, and good-humored. I thoroughly enjoyed having her in my home and looked forward to her visits each week. I recommend her without hesitation.

I am a current client of Erin’s and she has been so incredibly helpful! I had been anxious about child birth and my lack of knowledge I had going into it, and she’s given me so much information, shared her own experiences, and has helped me be much less worried about giving birth.

Latisha came alongside me and my family immediately following the birth of our third child and during a very busy and exhausting season of life! She helped us not only stay sane but thrive in the areas of feeding our infant son and maximizing rest/sleep when we could through overnight doula and lactation support. My main goal was to exclusively breastfeed our third child after a very difficult experience and failed attempt at exclusively nursing my now toddler aged twins. With Latisha’s support, guidance and expertise, I was able to achieve that goal and create an incredibly strong bond with my third child that I will be forever grateful for! She was there every step of the way the first 8 weeks postpartum, helping us navigate challenges and maximize sleep/rest in between feedings. Highly, highly recommend Tisha to any family seeking lactation and/or doula support! She is absolutely wonderful and incredibly gifted!

With 12+ years of doula experience, Sarah is ready to support you through your birth journey. She is passionate about guiding women and their families through pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum while attending all types of births as a doula! Sarah was a licensed massage therapist before becoming a doula. That training and experience has been a HUGE asset for her clients. It helped her learn a great deal about the body, like how to specifically look where pregnant women hold tension. She can remind you when and where to release that tension, and how to help the body relax using different massage techniques. Sarah's support for laboring moms often takes many forms. This includes encouragement, education, decision making, relaxation techniques, and suggesting position changes. She has extensive experience working with many different life situations and many different types of support people on the birth team. She knows it is very important to have a doula who knows how to respectfully support whomever is supporting that mom at her birth whether it is the husband, partner, mom, sister, or friend who needs emotional and educational support at the birth as well. It may be a different kind of support, but it is just as important to the laboring mother to have her loved ones better able to help her as well. Sarah has two beautiful children with her husband, Matthew. They had an amazing doula named Ginny for the birth of their daughter, who unexpectedly arrived early at 35 1/2 weeks. They were so thankful their doula was there supporting them. Ginny created calm wherever she went, and over time Sarah realized that she wanted to be able to offer that kind of atmosphere with love and support to pregnant moms, too. While going through Birth Doula training, Sarah was able to learn from, train under and be professionally mentored by her doula, Ginny. Sarah was honored to be hired at Ginny's non-profit doula organization after becoming a certified doula. In 2014, Sarah branched out into her own business. Doula work is not always easy, but it fills her heart with doing something she loves. All the love and support from her family has allowed her to attend over 200 births in the last 12 years.

Care philosophy

My role as a doula is to bring you all 12+ years of experience, education, and resources to your doorstep. It allows me to efficiently help you navigate through your pregnancy, labor and birth, and postpartum period. I am passionate about helping women and their families go through this time of life!

We had the privilege of working with Sarah during the height of the pandemic, so on top of the general stresses and worries of preparing for birth and postpartum, we didn’t have any family around to support us in-person. Sarah immediately felt like a trusted friend and advisor, and the preparatory meetings we shared were incredibly valuable from a practical what-to-expect perspective as well as an emotional one.

In the delivery room, she tracked my progress and gave us a birthing timeline which is a fascinating and treasured record. She supported my birthing process and took some wonderful photos of the birth as well.

Postpartum, Sarah graced our home on a twice weekly basis for night shifts to give my husband (and to some extent myself, a round-the-clock breastfeeding mom) some very much needed rest. Her confidence handling our daughter with loving care and good humor added so much to our early months as new parents. I’ll always remember her making cookies in our kitchen with our daughter snuggly and happily swaddled by her side. She also helped my husband and I with some accupressure treatment for our newly challenged shoulder and back muscles.

We have kept in regular touch with Sarah over the past two years and hope to remain in touch for a long time to come. Her skillful work as a doula, coupled with her personable, caring demeanor, have left an indelible mark on our family. We are forever grateful to her and to my colleague who recommended her to us.

As a trained Birth and Postpartum Doula, I feel honored to be able to share my expertise with the families I work with. As well as physical, emotional, and educational support during labor, my role is also to act as an advocate. I believe in DONA's mission of a doula for every family that wants one. A postpartum doula in Tuckahoe, VA is meant to help the entire family and their role is not just limited to the birthing parent and newborn. A doula provides physical and emotional support to parents and siblings, but they also offer information and advice regarding how to feed, bathe, swaddle, and soothe the baby.

They also often help with postpartum depression issues, and are considered child care “consultants” rather than medical professionals. Many postpartum doulas in Tuckahoe, VA offer a range of services that can help with parents trying to adjust to a newborn child. These services often include:

  • Sibling care
  • Assist with household chores
  • Parent-baby bonding
  • Physical and emotional recovery
  • Support to parents and extended family

A postpartum doula in Tuckahoe, VA can have a lasting positive impact on a family and help them feel more confident about their parenting role and the way that they feed and nurture their baby. They might offer advice regarding feeding, bathing, and parent-baby bonding.

It is important to note that a postpartum doula might offer advice but is not expected to provide medical care of any kind or serve as a replacement to an accredited physician. Postpartum doulas are also not qualified to prescribe medication.

Many new parents want to know about certified postpartum doulas and how exactly they are certified. Since the demand for postpartum doulas has greatly expanded in the last several years, the number of reputable postpartum doula training and certification programs has grown in Tuckahoe, VA. Training criteria can differ from program to program, but most follow a similar curriculum which includes core academic curriculum and practical hours and real-life care experience.

One of the most common national postpartum doula training certifications comes from DONA International. A postpartum doula usually receives about 27 hours of practical training before they are a certified postpartum doula.

There are also CAPPA-certified postpartum doulas in Tuckahoe, VA, as well. These doulas were certified by the Childbirth and Postpartum Professional Association, an international organization that certifies doulas and other childbirth educators/professionals.

As a reminder, because postpartum doulas are not trained to be a medical professional and diagnose and treat medical conditions, a certification is not required for them to practice.

As their names suggest, a birth doula’s main priority is to provide support services before, during and in the moments immediately after childbirth. A postpartum doula’s obligations usually begin after the birth, for several weeks or months. In many cases, your birth doula will also be a trained and certified postpartum doula, which can provide a continuity of care that many parents find extremely valuable.

Many parents want to know whether a postpartum doula or a baby nurse would meet their needs and expectations. A baby nurse might be focused on making sure that a baby sleeps or feeds properly, but that might be the extent of their role. A postpartum doula generally offers more holistic services for their clients.

A postpartum doula in Tuckahoe, VA is expected to be more involved with the family as a whole. They might remain involved in sibling care or also provide emotional support to the partner as both parents adjust to becoming new parents. This may even include support for older siblings, light housework, and even meal prep. A postpartum doula provides more physical, emotional, and informational support than a baby nurse.

You can hire two types of doulas in Tuckahoe, VA: a birth doula and a postpartum doula. The birth doula is during your pregnancy and through the birth of your child. They provide you with emotional, physical and educational support during your pregnancy, your labor and delivery and for the first few hours after your child is born.

A postpartum doula will support you for the first few weeks after the baby is born. They provide in-home assistance, including teaching you how to take care of your newborn, acting as lactation consultant, and can provide some night nanny services.
