My role as your postpartum doula or lactation counselor is to help prepare you (mind, body & soul) for one of the greatest transitions of your life. I will walk along side of you on this journey, helping to support you in your journey as new parents. I provide evidenced-based information on things such as infant feeding, emotional and physical recovery from birth, mother-baby bonding, infant soothing, and basic newborn care. Research shows that there is an easier transition if a good support team is in place.

Care philosophy

I love serving, supporting and loving parents through the journey of meeting their child. I love being with a couple when they welcome their first baby and being able to literally watch a family be born! I love easing the stress of new parenthood and empowering them. I love "mothering the mother".

She was amazing so helpful even when I got her at the end of my pregnancy tried to help as much as possible during my labor always advocating for me and giving me information about things that weren’t necessary in the labor process . Unfortunately I ended up getting a c section but none the less she made me feel so much more informed and comfortable throughout my labor .

As a Mother myself I deeply understand the transformation that Pregnancy and Birth provide. My own experience is what led to my passion to pursue a career in Birth Work. I feel deeply called to support and guide women as they navigate all that comes with having a baby in this time, whether at home or in the hospital. My philosophy is simple, to encourage and advocate for Mother’s choices in their care during Pregnancy, Labor and Postpartum. I work with my clients beginning in Pregnancy, where we meet and prepare for all the aspects of Labor, Newborn Care, Postpartum Care and Lactation. I aim for my clients to go into their Births feeling educated and confident. In Labor my services provide hands-on physical support, mental and emotional caretaking as well as Evidence-Based guidance on positioning, and so much more. During Postpartum I provide support with Lactation, resources for troubleshooting and references if necessary for Specialists.

Care philosophy

As a Birth and Postpartum Doula, my main priority is to advocate, support, and empower my clients as they navigate the path of Motherhood. My training and experience allow me to provide calm, grounded care and attention to my clients and their partners. In our work together I provide insight about Labor and Pregnancy, Evidence-Based information, emotional support, as well as hands-on comfort.

Valuing family and babies was something that I had to do.Support is something that everyone need from burping the baby while mom is in the shower to going with mother to the grocery store reaching for the sauce on the top shelf. The beginning stages of pregnancy is very critical as well that’s why I offer my massage services to mothers once a week or twice a month. Becoming a doula/massage therapist came to me I always had a nurturing heart but this was something different it brought sparks to my life. Like why not share my experiences and knowledge to someone. Having me as your doula will be breath taking and a great experience!

Care philosophy

As a mother of 4 and massage therapist, one of the things I value most in life is family and being in someone’s corner when they need you the most.

Sandra is everything you want and need in a doula. Her love and support are so evident in every meeting with her. I remember being very anxious when I found out I was pregnant and after meeting with Sandra for the first time I felt significantly better. She was always available for questions and always responded to me promptly. At my birth, she stayed with me the entire time from the start of my contractions to the delivery of my son. I always tell her I couldn’t do it without her and she always says “of course you could!” But her presence made the experience that much more memorable. I absolutely love Sandra both as a person and a professional. Anyone would be so fortunate to work with her!

Andrea is so easy to work with and a wonderful person to have on your team. She provided support and information throughout pregnancy, helped us to determine when it was time to head to the hospital, and stayed with us for a full 24 hours of complicated labor (including comfort and reassurance with a surprise c-section!). We were so grateful to have her and will recommend her to friends and family.

A postpartum doula in Charlottesville, VA is meant to help the entire family and their role is not just limited to the birthing parent and newborn. A doula provides physical and emotional support to parents and siblings, but they also offer information and advice regarding how to feed, bathe, swaddle, and soothe the baby.

They also often help with postpartum depression issues, and are considered child care “consultants” rather than medical professionals. Many postpartum doulas in Charlottesville, VA offer a range of services that can help with parents trying to adjust to a newborn child. These services often include:

  • Sibling care
  • Assist with household chores
  • Parent-baby bonding
  • Physical and emotional recovery
  • Support to parents and extended family

A postpartum doula in Charlottesville, VA can have a lasting positive impact on a family and help them feel more confident about their parenting role and the way that they feed and nurture their baby. They might offer advice regarding feeding, bathing, and parent-baby bonding.

It is important to note that a postpartum doula might offer advice but is not expected to provide medical care of any kind or serve as a replacement to an accredited physician. Postpartum doulas are also not qualified to prescribe medication.

Many new parents want to know about certified postpartum doulas and how exactly they are certified. Since the demand for postpartum doulas has greatly expanded in the last several years, the number of reputable postpartum doula training and certification programs has grown in Charlottesville, VA. Training criteria can differ from program to program, but most follow a similar curriculum which includes core academic curriculum and practical hours and real-life care experience.

One of the most common national postpartum doula training certifications comes from DONA International. A postpartum doula usually receives about 27 hours of practical training before they are a certified postpartum doula.

There are also CAPPA-certified postpartum doulas in Charlottesville, VA, as well. These doulas were certified by the Childbirth and Postpartum Professional Association, an international organization that certifies doulas and other childbirth educators/professionals.

As a reminder, because postpartum doulas are not trained to be a medical professional and diagnose and treat medical conditions, a certification is not required for them to practice.

As their names suggest, a birth doula’s main priority is to provide support services before, during and in the moments immediately after childbirth. A postpartum doula’s obligations usually begin after the birth, for several weeks or months. In many cases, your birth doula will also be a trained and certified postpartum doula, which can provide a continuity of care that many parents find extremely valuable.

Many parents want to know whether a postpartum doula or a baby nurse would meet their needs and expectations. A baby nurse might be focused on making sure that a baby sleeps or feeds properly, but that might be the extent of their role. A postpartum doula generally offers more holistic services for their clients.

A postpartum doula in Charlottesville, VA is expected to be more involved with the family as a whole. They might remain involved in sibling care or also provide emotional support to the partner as both parents adjust to becoming new parents. This may even include support for older siblings, light housework, and even meal prep. A postpartum doula provides more physical, emotional, and informational support than a baby nurse.

You can hire two types of doulas in Charlottesville, VA: a birth doula and a postpartum doula. The birth doula is during your pregnancy and through the birth of your child. They provide you with emotional, physical and educational support during your pregnancy, your labor and delivery and for the first few hours after your child is born.

A postpartum doula will support you for the first few weeks after the baby is born. They provide in-home assistance, including teaching you how to take care of your newborn, acting as lactation consultant, and can provide some night nanny services.
