Gabrielle Carpenter

It has been five beautiful years since I began the voyage into the unknown world of birth. My name is Gabrielle, but you can just call me Gabi. I am the founder and owner of Cu’Yara Birthing Services. My journey into birth began in 2003 after the birth of my niece. My sister had decided to use midwives and at the time I didn’t quite understand birth or midwives; all I knew was that I had a brand new niece and my sister had used someone that was a midwife. I never thought anything of it but I was just 11 yrs old at the time so what did I know? A few years later she delivered my nephew in the middle of her dining room in a giant tub, again never thought anything of it and years went by and I found myself on the steps of Ramapo College working towards my Bachelor’s Degree in Social Science with a concentration in Community Mental health and women’s studies with the end goal of one day becoming a pediatric nurse or even labor delivery but something was missing. Just a few months shy of graduation day I started to question my journey and then as if the universe had heard my thoughts it sent me on this crazy adventure. I began having dreams of hands catching a baby and I couldn’t stop thinking about midwives even though the last time I had even heard the word was back when I was just 13 yrs old. So I did what anyone else would do I called my sister and I started asking all of the questions, which then led me to read Ina May Gaskin, the business of being born and so much more. Soon after I found Birthwise Midwifery School and applied to their following fall program. Two weeks before graduation day I found out I was accepted into Birthwise’s Certified Professional Midwifery program. I walked to my graduation excited, scared, and overwhelmed about this new journey that I was about to take place. I completed my DONA Birth Doula training a few weeks later and I guess you can say the rest is history. As I have developed and grown as a birth doula and student midwife I believe one thing has always stayed consistent, and I can honestly say that this path was chosen for me. I believe that midwifery and birth work are connected to the new life that grows inside the womb. It is watching an individual shed their once single body to allow a new one to grow. It is touching the spirit that has entered the form and has brought new life to this earth. Birth is powerful, beautiful, scary, and so many more things that I wish to comprehend. It is such a raw moment for birthing people and their families. I am honored to be with you as you become a new family. I am blessed to be able to welcome life with my hands. My team and I look forward to meeting you and your loved ones. My hopes and plan are to provide love, support, and community for you and your family. - Always, Gabi

I decided to become a doula after watching the birth of my first grandson. I completed my training through DONA International. I have since attended 12 births. I provide 2 prenatal visits, 24 hour a day phone contact from two weeks prior to your birth to two weeks after your birth. I will be in attendance during as much of labor and delivery you want. For example, if you would like me to begin support in your home I will, or I will come to the hospital or birth center to provide support. I will also provide a post delivery visit within two weeks of giving birth.

Care philosophy

I am a wife, mother of four amazing children, and grandmother of seven beautiful grandsons and a granddaughter. I have experienced four natural childbirths and was the doula for the births of all but one of my grandchildren. I am a DONA International certified birth doula who believes that each woman can be empowered to experience childbirth on her own terms.

Claire is attentive and knowledgeable. Her calm demeanor calmed me and heled to strengthen me during labor and made it so much easier for me to relax and allow my body to do what it was made to do. I felt her presence when I needed it and she was 100% on my team, never leaving my side. I would highly recommend you hire her.

From the moment I met Lauren, I knew I had to have her on our birth team. She was so knowledgeable and confident in her answers and I could feel her genuineness while we had our meet and greet session. I felt like her price was very affordable for my family and in the end was worth every dollar of the investment. Lauren was there for us every step of the way with any questions we had, creating a birth plan, practicing relaxation techniques and helped create that comfortable space for us about the anxiety of birth. The moment I went into labor I called Lauren and within 2 hours she was at our hospital that was in the total opposite direction from her area and got there as quickly as possible. I felt so relieved when I saw her and she got right to work with guiding me through each contraction reminding me to focus on my breath and told me “I gotta get you moving” in my mind I’m like I do not want to move but I know she was right so we got to it. Lauren was so supportive of all our decisions and provided any education that we requested. I was so glad that not only did we get a doula but that chose Lauren. We would’ve literally been lost without her. She educated us so well on our rights and what choices we had in our birth which was extremely important. I’d recommend Lauren to anyone who wants to have top tier support and professionalism for their birth!

Doula Services: FAQs

A doula is a professional that provides emotional, physical and educational support to new parents before, during, and after childbirth and into the early postpartum period. Doulas are companions who strive to give families a safe, positive, and healthy labor experience. They provide parents with evidence-based information and education on childbirth and are someone who the parent can turn to with questions and concerns about having a baby. Doulas also take an active role in collaborating with the parent to create a birth plan.

A certified birth doula offers advice and techniques to help reduce the stress that the parent often experiences during childbirth and provides you with education about different aspects of delivery and labor and what comes after.

There are two ways you can hire a doula through Meela in Trenton, NJ.

The cost of a doula in Trenton, NJ can range from $796 to $1,351. These costs are based on a representative group of 308 doulas surveyed by Meela across the state of New Jersey. The average cost of a doula in New Jersey is higher than the U.S. national average cost of a doula, which is $971.

When hiring a birth doula in Trenton, NJ, you and your doula will discuss and agree upon a fee structure, and your doula will send you itemized invoices through Meela, which you can pay securely through the app.

Some insurance companies will cover all or part of the cost of hiring a doula. Contact your insurance company to find out if they offer any coverage for hiring a doula; not all insurance companies do.

You can hire two types of doulas in Trenton, NJ: a birth doula and a postpartum doula. The birth doula is during your pregnancy and through the birth of your child. They provide you with emotional, physical and educational support during your pregnancy, your labor and delivery and for the first few hours after your child is born.

A postpartum doula will support you for the first few weeks after the baby is born. They provide in-home assistance, including teaching you how to take care of your newborn, acting as lactation consultant, and can provide some night nanny services.

Yes, a birth doula can provide support during a Cesarean birth and delivery. Doulas are non-medical professionals and do not replace obstetricians, physicians, midwives or nurses. They are an additive member to the team and provide emotional, physical and informational support to the birthing parent, partner and family. It is up to you whether the certified doula can remain in the operating room during the procedure.

When you hire a doula in Trenton, NJ, your services typically include several in-person prenatal sessions, 24/7 phone and text support, full attendance throughout your labor, and several hours of support immediately following your birth.

A doula in Trenton, NJ can help you in any kind of birth. Certified doulas are able to assist parents in creating the ideal “birth environment” and help parents deliver their baby safely. A doula can provide support during the birth whether it occurs in a hospital, a home, or another birth center of some kind. Doulas are there to support you in your desired birth preferences, whether that is a preference for natural, non-medicated, assisted, C-section or anything else.

Certified doulas can also act as a liaison between you and hospital staff regarding your childbirth expectations and preferences. For example, if your preference is to have a non-medicated birth, a doula can help guide you through that process and create a personalized birth plan. A certified doula in Trenton, NJ does not replace medical staff (such as your obstetrician and nurses).

When a surgical procedure is required, there are some situations in which a birth doula can also remain in the operating room, although this is not an expected obligation. A certified birth doula can also assist hospital staff to improve the overall birthing experience. A doula in Trenton, NJ will typically stay with the parents for several hours after birth to help them with birth recovery.

Evidence suggests that a birth doula in Trenton, NJ can help improve parent satisfaction with their baby’s birth and delivery. The involvement of a doula can also lead to shorter deliveries with less complications.

Recent studies show that parents who have a support person like a doula by their side throughout labor and childbirth are more likely to:

  1. Give birth without the need for pain medicine
  2. Describe their birth experience in a positive way
  3. Give birth without the need for medical intervention, such as C-sections or vacuum delivery
  4. Experience a shorter labor

You can hire a doula early in your pregnancy to allow you time to get to know each other and to begin planning for your later trimesters, labor, birth, and aftercare. It is ideal to hire a doula when you are around 20 weeks along, but you can start looking for one before that.

It is never too late to hire a doula in Trenton, NJ; you have right up to your due date to find a doula near you and receive all the benefits of doula support.

While many people think that a doula and a midwife are the same thing, their educational background and job duties are different. Doulas are non-medical professionals who provide emotional, physical and educational support, while also offering actionable advice and guidance to new parents about how to nurture their baby.

A midwife is a certified nurse-midwife (CNM) or a certified midwife (CM). CNMs are medical professionals that are certified and licensed by the American College of Nurse-Midwives. CMs are also certified, but they do not have nursing backgrounds.

Doulas are not medical professionals; they focus on the emotional support for the parents and the family before, during, and after the birth of the baby. Their job is to provide information, advice, and support to the family not diagnose any medical conditions or provide medical advice.
