I have known Sydney Moore for a few years in the capacity of her CAPPA doula trainer and through the Young Women’s Resource Center in Des Moines, IA. Sydney takes an active role in our local doula community and parenting community. She has earned a glowing reputation in Des Moines as a fantastic doula!

One of the biggest strengths I see for Sydney is that she is very passionate about birth rights for people. She follows her scope of practice well and provides the care that families need and deserve in our area. Growing families would be very lucky to have her on their baby team!

Sydney was my doula from April to June of 2022, supporting me through the pregnancy, labor, delivery and postpartum of my first child. Throughout the experience Sydney showed a commitment to helping me make informed decisions about care, connect me to community resources when necessary and compassionately advocate for me as a young black woman. Sydney also has a bubbly, friendly and relatable demeanor that made trust building effortless.

I was impressed by Sydney at our first meeting by her effective use of informational materials to demonstrate complex maternity concepts in a relatable way throughout our working relationship. Her showing me how Braxton Hicks contractions physically differed from labor contractions became extremely helpful the closer I got to and during delivery.

She also did an amazing job tailoring her approach to a way that was most comfortable for me. Sometimes, I had a lot of questions and Sydney provided information to make informed decisions without bias. Sometimes, I did not know what questions to ask and she would tell me ask me questions to empower me advocate for myself with medical professionals and family. While trying to decide on whether or not to circumcize my son, she listened to both my and my partners beliefs as well as sending me independent research. She also gave me space to make my decision either way without influence when I was being pressured by family.

Sydney has been a doula for my program’s Doula Program for a while now and she is always someone we can depend on to go above and beyond for our clients and a lot of clients request to work with her! She not only supports clients through their pregnancy, birth and early postpartum period, she also does all that she can to connect them to services when need and make sure they have the resources they need to be successful parents.

I even referred one of my best friends to Sydney when she became pregnant and Sydney was an amazing support as her doula! My friend was really going through a lot and needed a lot of flexibility which Sydney was 100% able to give and she went out of her way to make my friend feel comfortable in all stages.

Sydney worked through her birth plan with her and really took the time to build rapport and grow a connection with my friend. She also was instrumental in combating some of the pregnancy, birth and parenting myths that my friend’s family was upholding and taught my friend a lot about infant care and breastfeeding. I would recommend her to anyone going through pregnancy and birth!
