Susan R. | Birth Doula in Memphis, TN

Cultivating Empowered Birth

    Practice overview

I began my formal journey toward becoming a doula by taking a weekend training workshop from Rae Davies at The Birth Company in the spring 2017. During that training with Rae, I was introduced to Evidence Based Birth® and was accepted into the Evidence Based Birth® Instructor program that fall. Whew! That was quite a year!! By 2019, I’d met all the requirements to officially become a DONA International certified birth doula. My continuing education includes the one day When Survivors Give Birth workshop taught by two of DONA International’s founders, Penny Simkin, PT, CCE, CD(DONA), and Phyllis Klaus, MFT, LMSW; that workshop has been incredibly helpful to my work supporting expectant parents. I also earned my CLC® from the Academy of Lactation Policy and Practice in 2020 to better provide education and counseling for families choosing to breastfeed.

That makes for a lot of alphabet soup after my name, but what’s really important to me is being part of the support network that gets families off to a strong start whether it’s the first baby or the newest addition.

    Care philosophy

Having me as your doula means:
    1) you have had the opportunity to prepare for your birth by asking questions, receiving solid resources to address those questions and practicing comfort measures.
    2) you have someone who knows you and your partner and is dedicated to being with you for your labor and birth.
    3) you have people by your side for birth who fully understand your preferences

Susan was my doula for both of my children’s birth. One was in a hospital setting, unmedicated, and the other was a home birth. In both settings Susan made me feel as comfortable as a contracting woman could feel, she made me feel safe, and seen. Her expertise as a physical therapist was a huge plus. I will tell anyone looking for a doula that she is the best hands down!

I cannot begin to describe how grateful I am for Susan and her support during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum. As a first-time mom, Susan helped me feel educated and informed during my pregnancy, and I felt very prepared when the time came to give birth. Thanks to Susan, I felt so empowered during and after the birth of my child! She is so knowledgeable, attentive, and intentional and is there to help you have the birthing experience that you want. I cannot recommend her enough!

I can’t say enough good things about Susan! She is so good at making the scary parts of pregnancy, labor and delivery, and postpartum seem less daunting. She takes her time to make sure that everyone is educated and on the same page and everyone understands what is going on. I have recommended Susan to every pregnant friend I have. Susan is the best!
